Background of the study:
The integration of educational technology in classrooms has revolutionized teaching and learning processes by fostering greater student engagement and interactive learning environments. In Uyo, schools are increasingly adopting digital tools—such as interactive whiteboards, e-learning platforms, and mobile applications—to enhance educational delivery (Ifeanyi, 2023). These innovations provide dynamic learning experiences that cater to different learning styles and promote active participation. However, the success of technology integration depends on factors such as teacher proficiency, infrastructure, and access to reliable internet connectivity (Okpara, 2024). While some schools have reported positive outcomes, others face challenges in adapting traditional pedagogies to a digital framework. The use of technology has the potential to transform passive learners into active participants by making learning more accessible and engaging. This study critically examines the impact of educational technology on student engagement in Uyo, assessing both the opportunities and limitations. It explores how digital tools can be optimized to improve learning outcomes and identify potential areas for further technological integration in education (Ifeanyi, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
Despite the potential benefits of educational technology, many schools in Uyo face challenges that hinder its effective integration. Issues such as inadequate teacher training, unreliable infrastructure, and limited access to digital resources affect student engagement and learning outcomes. This study aims to identify these challenges and explore solutions to enhance technology-driven education (Okpara, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of educational technology on student engagement.
  2. To identify challenges hindering effective technology integration.
  3. To recommend strategies for optimizing digital learning tools.

Research questions:

  1. How does educational technology affect student engagement in classrooms?
  2. What are the major challenges in integrating digital tools into teaching?
  3. Which strategies can improve the effectiveness of educational technology?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: The use of educational technology increases student engagement.
  2. H₂: Inadequate teacher training negatively impacts technology integration.
  3. H₃: Enhanced digital infrastructure improves learning outcomes.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it provides insights into the role of educational technology in enhancing student engagement. Its findings will inform policymakers and educators on how to effectively integrate digital tools to improve learning experiences in Uyo (Ifeanyi, 2023; Okpara, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The research is limited to assessing the impact of educational technology on student engagement in Uyo Local Government Area. It does not examine other educational factors or external influences.

Definitions of terms:

  • Educational Technology: Digital tools and platforms used to support teaching and learning.
  • Student Engagement: The level of interest and active participation of students in the learning process.
  • Digital Infrastructure: The technical resources and systems required for effective technology integration.
